Comments B Company in Vung Tau, Spec 5 when I left in Sept of '68, operated Clark M-280 Scraper building the airfield ( where a C-130 almost killed me on takeoff from the opposite end of the runway ! )Was almost hit by a sniper's bullet while on convoy in the back of a duece and a half, enroute to an Artillery site in Gia Ray, while passing through a rubber plantation...I can still hear that bullet passing by my right ear...Now living in Vacaville, California, with my wife of 19 years and 2 children, 15 and 17 years old. Anyone remember me, the " surfer " from California ???? Used to surf at the Aussies R&R site at the beach near Vung Tau, remember? Write me ! Welcome home my brothers....Rick Shelton

Comments Viewing your website for the 36th Engr Bn at Vung Tau(wasn't this a in-country RR location?), I was with the 46th Engr Bn, 20th Engr Bdge in Xuan Loc just north of Vung Tau. Had I known there was an engineering unit in Vung Tau I would have asked for a transfer(LOL), right! I like the cut-off pants in the pictures, it surely wasn't any hotter in Vung Tau was it? Just wanted to say hello and say I am glad you guys made it back and a job will done!

He made landings with the unit at Salerno and Anzio. He was seriously wounded by shell fragments of a German 88mm, while in Anzio. His name was, William Hardy "Bill" Pierce. I ask that you keep up your excellent work. Thanks, Allen

My MOS on first tour in Army was 12B20, stationed with the 24th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Armored Division, Johnson Kaserne, Furth, Germany, April 65 to December 66. Then I took a burst of six and trained as an Army journalist/photographer at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Ind. Went to Nam in April 68 and joined the First Cavalry Division as Combat Reporter/Photog for the "Cavalier", the Division newspaper. Did the 36th have PIO types. If so, would like to share stories with them. Good Luck with the Association and thanks for trying to keep the guys in touch with each other. It's important. FIRST TEAM. Frank M. Smart, Sonora, CA.

Comments: Great site Mickey. Very informative, and very helpful just like yourself and the several other Engineers I have come across in my search for info on the 43rd Engr Bn (Construction). I now believe they went to Vietnam as the 46th, and were in country certainly 66-68, and probably longer. Still need to find a DAVID JONES who served at that time in Company A. For those of you who don't know, I am the guy who identified the 17 Irish-born names on The Wall, and am now trying to find a buddy of a Combat Engineer who lives here in Ireland, and who still can't make it to The Wall. I do know that David Jones survived Vietnam, and if he is still alive, as I hope he is, I would appreciate a contact. Welcome Home to all you guys, and I hope a peaceful Memorial Day was had by all. Comments: Gentlemen and Engineer Brothers: Allow me to congratulate you on the formation of your new organization, the 36th Engineer Battalion Association Viet Nam. As a member of the 19th Combat Engineer Battalion Association Viet Nam, I must tell you that there is a whole LOT of positive experiences awaiting you as your organization expands and you continue to discover the whereabouts of your old comrades-in-arms. Thank you for allowing me the honor of assisting you in the beginning of your endevour, and let me take this opportunity to extend to each of you and any future members of your organization a sincere (though belated) "WELCOME HOME!".............
